August 4, 2025 | Ranchi

Veteran politician and tribal rights crusader Shibu Soren, one of Jharkhand’s most prominent leaders and a three-time Chief Minister, passed away today at the age of 81. Known fondly as "Guruji", Soren had been battling age-related health issues for several months.

A Life Dedicated to Tribal Welfare

Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village (Ramgarh district), Soren emerged as a fiery leader advocating for the rights of Adivasis and marginalized communities in the region. He founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the 1970s, a movement that eventually led to the creation of the state of Jharkhand in 2000.

Soren’s political journey began with grassroots activism and later saw him elected multiple times to the Lok Sabha. His relentless fight against displacement, land exploitation, and tribal oppression made him a revered figure among Jharkhand’s indigenous population.

Political Legacy

Shibu Soren served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times between 2005 and 2010. He also held key positions in the Union Cabinet, including the post of Union Minister for Coal. Despite several controversies in his political career, including legal battles, he remained a towering figure in state politics.

His son, Hemant Soren, has followed in his footsteps and currently serves as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. The father-son duo has shaped Jharkhand’s political landscape for over two decades.

Reactions Pour In

Political leaders across party lines have expressed condolences over Soren’s demise:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the demise of Shibu Soren ji. His contributions to public life and tribal welfare will be remembered forever. My condolences to his family and followers.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called Soren a “pillar of the tribal movement and a leader of the masses.”

BJP, JMM, and other state parties have announced a day of mourning.

Final Rites and Public Mourning

Shibu Soren's mortal remains will be kept at the JMM headquarters in Ranchi for the public to pay their respects. The Jharkhand government has declared three days of state mourning, and all official programs stand canceled during this period.

His final rites will be performed in his native village with full state honors.
